In recent decades, extensive knowledge has been acquired, particularly through supported projects of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), which is only partially reflected in the literature. From this starting position, the idea of creating this technical Wiki was developed in a workshop of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (Federal Environmental Foundation) in February 2008, which was attended by experts in conservation sciences from Denmark, England, Switzerland and Germany. The experts decided to bring into being a modern platform for knowledge management on the Internet that would offer simple and rapid access to knowledge from the widest range of technical disciplines on the maintenance of cultural assets endangered by salts.

SaltWiki is based on the scientific skills of the research network which comprises renowned scientists from academia, research institutes, state offices for the protection of historical monuments, companies, etc.
